7-11 Gold Premium Sumire Sapporo Miso Instant Ramen Review

I'm trying out 7-11's premium gold Sumire ramen today, one of two instant ramen bowls I picked up on my last trip to Japan in 2025. While 7-11 no longer sells the sought after Nakiryu instant ramen bowl, this and 7-11 Premium Gold Ippudo Bowl along with the 7-11 Gold Premium Tomita Tonkotsu make for very tasty instant ramen that will not disappoint!

Sumire is a popular miso ramen chain originally from the northern city of Sapporo, Hokkaido.  It and Junren are two famous ramen restaurants that were part of the second wave of Sapporo style miso ramen restaurants that opened after Aji no Sanpei invented the style in 1953.  Sumire's version of the soup is more rich than regular miso ramen that is often described as deeply savory with hints of garlic and onion.

Sumire 7-11 Instant Ramen Bowl

Lid of the bowl. It shows a pile of ground pork, green onions, and backfat on top of the reddish brown soup and noodles. Sumire's logo is boldly displayed across the top. The luscious brown background colour matches the rim of the ramen bowl and I wonder if Sumire's bowls are this colour.

The characters on the lid talk about "Pursuing the taste that is created by Sumire's cooking method." The  lard is fried over high heat so the aroma and flavour are locked in. There is a rich miso flavour of Sapporo miso ramen. It pretty much is telling you what you will get!

The opened noodle bowl showing the air-dried noodle block, a packet of pork soup base powder, liquid oil and miso soup base, and dried ingredients for toppings. The big blue packet is the liquid soup which is ADDED LAST!

Add the powdered soup base and dried ingredients to the noodle block. You have big pieces of green onion, ground pork nuggets, and menma (pickled bamboo shoot). I shake it gently to settle all the ingredients so they rehydrate better.

Pour in boiling water up to the fill line (440 ml of water). Put the lid down to keep the heat in.

Place the liquid soup base on top of the lid to heat it up. There are fats and oils in this soup base so the heat softens and helps them liquify for easier mixing later. The packet also keeps the lid closed.

After three minutes the noodles will have rehydrated. You can now loosen up the noodle block with a fork or chopsticks and then add in the liquid soup base. You can see there is a deep brown miso component to the soup base. Stir it well!

This is what the finished soup looks like. There is a layer of oil on top of the soup which gives if both richness and flavour! It also helps hold the heat in.

It turns out that this ramen bowl is highly rated on Reddit where reviews say it is absolutely a top level ramen. I have to agree after trying it s it is delicious. This didn't come as a surprise in any way!

When I added the boiling water to just the powdered pork soup and the dried ingredients it smelled like a wonderful meaty broth with a hint of green onion aroma. After rehydrating the noodles I added in the condensed miso / oil packet. Miso has a complex flavor profile that is earthy, salty, savory, and umami, with subtle hints of sweetness and tanginess like a rich, fermented soy sauce. Its kind of hard to describe - kind of like describing salt if you've never had salt... With the liquid soup added there was a light spiciness in the aroma too.

There was a fair bit of oil on the surface of the soup so it was obvious that it would be pretty flavourful. The was a rich and robust miso flavour to the broth that gave it a deep flavour profile that went very well with the pork soup. A light spiciness accentuated and caressed the savoury elements too. The ground pork nuggets had a nice meaty texture and taste while the larger green onion pieces and the menma provided a bit of light crunch. The medium thick, dried noodles rehydrated well with a nice firm bite and springiness to them. Slurping the noodles picked up a good bit of broth and made for tasty mouthfuls.  This is a very satisfying bowl of noodles that is highly recommended!
