Ameyoko Market Streets - Tokyo Intro: Experience #3 of 55

This is a market area that starts near Ueno Station and stretches out to Okachimachi Station.  It sprang up after World War II, was known as a black market area, and is now a bustling area of small shops and dining establishments that is busy day and night.  There are stores for shoes, clothes, watches, fish mongers, produce stands, and more.  People often visit this area to shop for bargains.

The area has plenty of places to pick up a hot snack like freshly fried croquettes, takoyaki, or more serious meals like yakiniku, Chinese food, seafood rice bowls, etc.  For snack foods and sweets, don’t miss the amazing Niki no Kashi candy/snack shop.  Niki no Kashi, a well established shop, has a huge assortment of Japanese and foreign treats.  The shop has two floors and sells more traditional Japanese dagashi candy on the upper floor in bulk.  The prices are good too.  Across the street from Niki no Kashi is a small Buddhist temple you can also check out.  If you are into toys, don’t forget to visit the Yamashiroya toy store in this area with its five floors of toys.

Check out the Ueno Asian Underground Market in the basement of the Ameyoko Center Building for even more food related and other shopping.  You can find goods from all over Asia here, but many local restaurant owners also come here to stock up for their businesses, so you will find fresh meat, fish, and produce, along with all kinds of other food ingredients.  This vibrant underground mall is easy to miss so look for the red and white signs leading downstairs at the building.  Under the railroad tracks here are additional malls and stores to see.

You can visit this area easily from the south exit at Ueno Station, and you can have a nice visit here after visiting Ueno Park or the National Museum.  Don't forget to see the ancient Dancing Haniwa statues at the National Museum!
