When I saw this Nissin Rose Tomato Cream and Cheese flavour cup noodle on the shelf it looked both pretty and bizarre. Nissin has a Chili Tomato ramen that is actually pretty good, not one of my favourites, but it makes for a nice change every so often. I wondered how different this noodle cup was from it being very pink on the outside. It turns out this was a variation of a Korean rosé cream flavour.
The marketing information for this cup says it is the taste of the popular gourmet "Rosé Cream" from Korea! The flavour is characterized by the addictive taste of the rich cream soup with the flavor of cheese in which you can feel the mellow taste of tomatoes and the spiciness of chili pepper.
I had to look up Korean rosé cream myself as I had never heard this flavour before. Rosé cream is recent addition to the Korean spicy playbook. It is a combination of Italian tomato cream sauce and Korean spiciness. There are many recipes online for Korean Rose Tteokbokki now and you can find it in trendy restaurants in Korea. The rosé sauce has a reddish pink colour and is a thicker sauce than regular red/orange tteokbokki sauce which has spicy gochujang (chili paste) as the main ingredient. The rosé sauce is a mildy spicy sauce that actually sounds really good to me. By the way, tteokbokki is basically chewy rice cakes in a spicy sauce that is a popular Korean street food.

Front of the cup. It has a lot of pink and black. The name is in bright yellow characters for "Spicy Noodles" on a black background with other white characters for "Tomato Cream & Cheese." It is a plain, but bold presentation that stands out. I like how it says NEW in the corner too! |
The front of the cup shows some noodles being lifted out of a soup with basil and tomatoes on the surface. Hints of Italian here for sure. The soup is a creamy pink/red colour.
|
The top of the cup. It has the standard noodles found with cup noodle shown on the righ with big cubes of meat and tomato in the centre. Bits of green onion add a nice colour balance to it. You can see there are graphics of tomatoes and cheese in yellow outline on the pink. |

Nutritional information. The picture at the top says that it is spicy with chili peppers and has both clams and scallops for more flavour. There are little pictures of scallops and clams in the bottom right. I didn't notice these the first time I looked! |

3/4 view of the cup. It is quite pretty. |

The contents of the cup. There is a lot of soup base powder. I don't know how they do it, but these little cubes of concentrated tomato are amazing. They rehydrate and hold their shape. Some type of binder must be used. They are also found in the Tomato Chili flavour. |
|
Everything rehydrates in three minutes. You can see it is a reddish orange in colour. Not quite pink. |
When I opened the lid I could smell basil and tomato. A nice beginning. There was also a cheese smell to go along with it. After rehydration the smell was more of a rich cheesy and tomato aroma.
The flavour of the soup was mildly like tomato and the chili pepper hits right away for heat. It really was only a medium level heat, but it seemed to have a bit of a zip to it to make it sharper. The cheese becomes a background flavour after a mouthful. It lives up to what they advertised, but I'm pretty sure it isn't as creamy as an actual rose cream, but this is a soup and not a sauce. This soup does not lack in the flavour department.
The tomato cubes stay together with a strong tomato taste and they are soft and melt in your mouth. The noodles and meat are the standard Cup Noodle style, so nothing special here. The basil and green onion vanish into the soup. Overall, this is a noodle cup with a nicely different flavour and hit of spiciness. I'd definitely recommend that people try it once if they see it.
