Maruchan Curry, Fried Tofu Buckwheat Soba Bowl Review

It's Maruchan time again. I came across an interesting bowl noodle at the supermarket that combines curry and your regular kitsune soba bowl. This one adds a rich curry sauce to the regular dashi flavour that even has extra bonito flakes. Best of all, it has an extra large piece of fried tofu to go with the noodles! I can't say I've ever had curry with dashi before, but I'm willing to give it a shot. This seems to be a limited edition noodle bowl as I don't see it on their website now.

3/4 view of the bowl. It has a black colour scheme that goes nicely with the gold of the lettering and the yellowy brown tones of the curry sauce and the fried tofu.

The lid of the bowl clearly shows a big piece of tofu. The black characters in the yellow box say "Huge Serving". The big characters say "Kitsune" or fox as they like fried tofu!

Ingredients and manufacturing info.

Preparation directions and nutritional content. Lots of calories in this big bowl. You need to add in both the dashi powder and curry powder to the noodles and then add 540 ml of boiling water then let it rehydrate for 3 minutes. That fried tofu sucks up water like a sponge!

Allergens and contact info.

The contents of the noodle bowl. You get a block of buckwheat noodles, a big piece of fried tofu (mine broke in half), and a packet of dashi soup base, and a packet of curry soup powder.

Everything added into the bowl.

I added in the boiling water and stirred everything around to mix in all the soup powders and to push the tofu down a bit to make sure it hydrated well. Close the lid and wait 3 minutes.

This was an interesting combo of flavours. I can't say I've had curry buckwheat noodles before. I wasn't sure how the curry would mix with the dashi, but it works pretty good. The umami in the dashi added a slight fishy note, but the curry came through strong and was the predominant flavour in the soup. I'm not sure its going to be my favourite combo as there's nothing like the regular kitsune soba bowl with its simplicity. I'm glad I tried this one and boy did I enjoy eating the big piece of sweet fried tofu in between slurping my noodles! The nuttiness of the buckwheat noodles and the curry went well together, but I probably shouldn't be surprised.
