Pe Young Salmon Potato Yakisoba

I picked up this unusual instant yakisoba noodle from Candysan awhile back.  It was a salmon potato flavour instead of your typical fried yakisoba sauce.  I think I've only had a few noodles from Pe Young, a company that has been in business since 1929.  Pe Young makes dry noodles amongst other things in Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture, and started manufacturing instant noodles in 1962.  I think they are more famous for their "Pe Young Sauce Yakisoba" which was launched in 1975.

This isn't one of the large instant noodle bowls with a smaller tray, but it has a full sized block of noodles inside.  I was quite intrigued by the salmon / potato flavour as it sounded like a workable combo and was different.  From many things that I have had.
3/4 view of the tray of noodles.
The top of the package.  You can see that it prominently displays the salmon and potato on it.  It is an interesting choice of colours and art that is bright, but sure leaves a great deal up to the imagination.  I wasn't too sure what to expect inside.

This was one of the neatest lids I have seen in any cup noodle type product.  The directions, arrow, and pictures make it quite a dynamic display.  Open at the A, peel the lid back to the line at B. Take out the satchets from inside, add the toppings satchet back in, pour in boiling water to the fill line, then close.  Wait 3 minutes, peel the life off flap at the corner of C back to reveal drain holes.  Drain the excess water off, then peel the whole lid off.  Now add the sauce packet and mix well.
The noodle block, the packet of dried salmon and potato cubes, and the packet of sauce.
After adding boiling water, letting it sit for 3 minutes, the noodles rehydrated nicely and the fish and potatoes also were nice and soft too.
This noodle dish was not a dish with a heavy aroma.  You could smell the mayonnaise-like cream sauce and the salmon did have a bit of a salmon fish aroma, but it was not overly fishy.  There wasn't a huge packet of sauce so the sauce wasn't thick or gooey either.  The noodles and the a salmon actually went well together with the salmon tasting pretty good for re-hydrated.  The fish also had a firmer, flaky texture too.   The noodles were firm and had a good chew, and the little chunks of potato were really more there for show than anything else.  An interesting little dish that I'm not sure I would buy again but was well worth trying out for something different!  I don't think this is a regular offering so it could be seasonal.
