Evangelion Instant Noodle Cup - Asuka Shoyu Ramen Review

This fiesty, full of attitude, Asuka Shoyu Cup of Noodles is the second review of the Evangelion Instant Noodle Cups of a series of four.  I wasn't too sure it was going to be fiesty like Asuka, but a shoyu cup noodle is usually pretty good as it is the default / original flavour for these things.  In episode 12 of the Evangelion anime, Shinji, Rei, and Asuka are taken for ramen by Misato after defeating another angel.

In this episode, Asuka orders an extra large shark fin ramen with pork.  I guess it is possible it was a shoyu base.  More interestingly, in the Evangelion 2.22 movie you find out the oceans are kind of wrecked, and they do appear red, so I guess if must be artificial shark fin (which suits me just fine as you shouldn't be eating shark fin anymore as they are endangered and it is a waste of natural resources too).

The Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 or Evangelion 4.0 movie never released this summer.  Delayed, it will release in the future, but the movie tie-ins released anyways.  Myojo released four cup of noodles this summer that uses their black cat mascot as yet another angel. There are four flavours - shoyu, miso, tonkotsu, and shio, each with their own character cups.  I'm always happy to see movie / franchise tie-ins like this and I managed to order one of each to get a complete set.  These are limited edition cup noodles and they sell out pretty quick.  There have been a few reviews of these, but they usually go with the Rei, Shinji, and Asuka Tonkotsu version, but I'm working the other way by trying the Shinji and Kaworu Shio (Salt) Ramen first.  These ramen come in a pretty standard set of flavours, but I'm always game to try them out.

Lid of the cup.  You have the Myojo mascot as the 3rd Angel again from the series.  I like how the colors are coordinated, with the bright red matching the Evangelion emergency hexagons on the NERV displays.

3/4 view of the front of the Asuka Shoyu Ramen Cup.  It uses a laminated paper cups with a soft foam exterior that allows fine detail colour printing without bleeding.  A marvel of technology.

Asuka on the front of the cup with EVA Unit 02.  Nice color coordination on the cup with the white and red that matches her plug suit.

EVA 02 with a progressive knfe on the front of the cup in a nice action pose.

Preparation instructions and cooking directions.  Pretty standard three minute cup noodles.

It shows the cat angel being part of the third impact.  It kind of makes you think this will be an exciting noodle.

Ingredients and nutritional information.

Seasoning oil.

Lifting the lid shows plenty of standard shoyu cup noodle toppings and a ramen block.

There is naruto, green onion, cabbage, egg, and little ground pork blocks on top of the noodles.

The rehydrated noodles and toppings.

Preparing the noodles was easy.  I added boiling water to it, closed the lid, and waiting three minutes for it to rehydrate.  Lifting the lid showed that everything was ready to eat.  There was a nice savoury smell from the soy sauce based soup coming from it.  I then added the seasoning oil, which was fairly innocuous.  Everything then got a good mixing to make sure the noodles loosened up and that the soup and oil blended together.

This was a good shoyu cup of noodles.  The noodles were pretty standard, had a good chew, and the soup was very nice and pleasant.  The flavour didn't pack an Asuka type wallop, but it was a good shoyu.  The toppings all rehydrated nicely and added to the soup and noodles.  All in all, this is a pretty tasty noodle that is elevated a bit due to the fancy tie-in packaging.
