Day 2 in Tokyo Travelogue - Evening with Godzilla and Christmas Lights

Back to Day 2 in Tokyo - Visiting Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Taking a Taxi

My lunch was pretty late so I wasn't all that hungry for dinner, but I did buy some food and snacks at the 7-11.  I do like their sandwiches, which are always fresh and tasty too.  They also had the limited time Pokemon onigiri, so I had to try those of course!  If you don't feel like a full meal, your stomach is a little off or something, the konbini can be a good choice.  They have fried chicken, steamed meat buns,  cup noodles, salads, miso soup or other soups you can make with boiling water in your hotel room.  There are also other meals you can heat up in a minute in the microwave.

The ubiquitous Japanese vending machine.  They take SUICA!

Pokemon rice balls.  Different flavours in each.  I had a pork one.

An assortment of fresh sandwiches.  The bread is always so soft and fluffy, yet firm.

Nice assortment of pastries!

Other snacks and treats.

A light snack.

That night I head out to see Christmas Illuminations at Tokyo Midtown Hibiya and the Godzilla statues there. I didn't want to do anything too ambitious as I was still taking it easy on my foot.  I had already walked quite a bit that day, so by no means was it really "taking it easy."  It had continued raining, but had eased up quite a bit or stopped by the time I went out again.  I took the train from the hotel down to Ginza Station and walked over to Tokyo Midtown Hibiya.  Little did I know that I could have done most of the trip underground (see my underground exploration on my last day here!).

The underground walk east from Ginza Station has some really nice art.

Some interesting open areas underground.  This connected to an underground parkade that went on for some ways.  Full of nice cars.

Statue in Ginza. Where I came up to the surface.

I walked under the Yamanote Line tracks on the street level to arrive at Tokyo Midtown Hibiya.  This is a newer mall / office complex that I had never been to.

Colour shifting lights for Christmas.

The streets around Midtown Hibiya were all lit up with colour shifting lights for Christmas.  It was very pretty and you can tell that the streets were damp from the photos.  LEDs have made this a common thing these days, but it isn't a bad thing.  I was looking for Chanter Square which is were the new Godzilla statue from the Shin Godzilla movie is located.  It is quite bit bigger than the original statue before this whole area was redeveloped.  The Toho movie company has offices here and they have two major cinema complexes here.  One is underground, while the other is way up in Midtown Hibiya building with nice views out the giant glass windows.  There are nice places to eat all over here, even in the underground level of the buildings (one wonders how all of these restaurants and shops can stay in business). I had a close look at the Godzilla statue in Chanter Square and then went to see the original statue of Godzilla that had sat here for decades in the upper movie theatre.

Front view of the new Godzilla statue.  This is about as close as you can get as it is mounted above the entrance to a parkade and raised above the ground.

Front view of the original Godzilla statue here.

A side view of the original Godzilla statue.  It is only 4 feet high or so, but very detailed.

After seeing the Godzilla statues I headed back to the train station and stopped at the Bic Camera here by the Tokyo International Forum.  I did a little shopping for cell phone accessories.  If you are looking for accessories for your phone, Japan is the place to be.  There are racks and rack and racks of stuff, where as you get like 25 feet of space at home here.  There is just so much stuff available in Japan.
