Summer 2024 Japanese and Asian Snacks at the Supermarket

The imports of different types of candy and snacks from Japan and other Asian countries has changed over the last few years.  I'm not sure if it is because the importers are getting more savvy or the various Asian supermarkets are requesting more variety.  All I know is that Calgary and Edmonton are getting more variety and even the odd limited editions of snacks or instant noodles, something that you didn't see outside of Vancouver. There is also competition from more supermarket chains for Asian customers too now.  In Edmonton you have T&T, Lucky, A Mart, H Mart, Superstore (owner of T&T), and even the odd item at Walmart (there was a pile of stuff for Asian New Year).

I've never used one of the subscription box services as they tend to be full of stuff I don't want, but I'd imagine they are having a harder time of it these days if they are competing with Asian supermarket chains.  Anyhow, there is way more stuff to consume now than I have budget or could even try now, so lets get on with showing you some of the different products available.

Vietnamese Pokemon Oreos.

Wagon wheel type chocolate and Pikachu flavour cookies.

Your classic Pokemon noodles.  Soy and seafood flavour.

Pokemon candy jars.

Spicy shoestring potato chips.

Spicy peppercorn potato chips from China.

Calbee French salad shrimp crackers.

Garlic and salt shrimp crackers.

Nuts and rice crackers.

Cheese and nut rice crackers.

Two kinds of matcha chocolates from Meiji.  Mushroom shape and bamboo shoot shape.

Hello Kitty candy.

More unusual green tea and peach Kit Kats in gift boxes.

Lots of green tea Kit Kats.

Korean wagon wheels in the original chocolate and a green tea flavour.

Shelf-stable dorayaki red bean filled pancakes from Taiwan.

Hello Kitty strawberry flavoured marshmallow treats.

Fruit Pocky bicuit sticks.

Coconut tropical granola.  These are tasty granolas, but they have a lot of sugar.

This is like a spicy Korean family size of instant noodles in a huge tray.  Do they use these with hot pot or picnics or something?

Guoba spicy pepper hot pot flavoured rice crackers.  I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a joke on military rations based on the picture, but it translates as the military training was unforgettable and I became one too.

This spicy chicken alfredo Buldak cream carbonara was making the rounds on social media a few months ago.  Hot and tasty apparently, but too spicy for me.
Koikeya Japanese Pizza Chips

Lemon chocolate sticks with crunchy bits. Nicely lemon with a bit of a crunch.

That's a pile of different stuff.  Hope you like the pictures.  See ya around.
