Suginami Animation Museum - Tokyo Intro: Experience #39 of 55
It is about a 25 minute walk from Ogikubo Station to this small museum. Ogikubo is on the way out to the Ghibli Museum and Nakano Broadway. This free museum has a number of animation related activities, many displays about making animation, and a wall-sized historical timeline. Some of the activities are lightbox tracing, coloring, a dubbing booth, library, and an anime theater. A corner of the museum exhibits the desks of animators. There are English descriptions and subtitles for videos. Most people would take a half hour to an hour here. The primary language in use here is Japanese, so not all exhibits are accessible to English speakers.
Suginami Ward is home to over 40 animation companies, with the big ones being Satelight, Studio Bones, and Sunrise. Quite a ways north of here (45 mins to an hour by bus or train) is the Toei Animation Museum too. Toei animated One Piece, Digimon, Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon, Pretty Cure, and Mazinger Z along with other shows. Check their website to see if a trip is worth the effort.
