Odaiba High Tech - Tokyo Intro: Experience #26 of 55

All metal finish and cross-struts make the Fuji TV building look very futuristic.

Odaiba is a giant man-made island in Tokyo Bay.  It has a number of high-tech attractions, museums, malls, and hosts many trade shows at the Tokyo Big Site convention center.  Most tourists reach Odaiba by taking the driverless, fully automated, Yurikamome monorail from Shimbashi Station.

Rainbow Bridge.  It is huge with a sidewalk roadways, and train tracks running on it.  Ships pass underneath.

The train crosses under the Rainbow Bridge and most people disembark at Daiba Station, which is near malls like the Decks, Aqua City, and Divercity.  You need to go behind some buildings such as the Fuji TV building to get to Divercity and its giant Gundam robot statue, which is a 5 minute walk away.

Venus Fort

Toyota Megaweb

Everything is well landscaped and kind of futuristic here.  A mall that is slightly further away is Venus Fort with its ancient Roman theme (reminds me of Las Vegas).  The high tech attractions and more are listed below:
  • Miraikan.  A great technology museum with rocket engines on display, Honda Asimo robot demos, a giant animated globe of the Earth, and much more.  If you like tech and have time, see this museum.
  • Panasonic Show Room.  Current Panasonic technology and emerging technologies.  Many interactive things to do and shows technology from all sectors and industries, not just consumer products.
  • Toyota Mega Web.  Where Toyota showcases their cars and technology and there are driving simulators and a test drive track.  Learn about fuel cells, electric cars, personal mobility devices, etc.   There is also a History Garage where you can see vintage cars from around the world.  Venus Fort is pretty much right here too, so you can visit this mall which is worth a walk-through if you are in the area.
  • Fuji TV.  This shiny, metallic, futuristic building with its big metal orb is huge.  Try walking up to their main plaza level from the side or take the chain of escalators.  There is an observation deck and a fancier One Piece restaurant here too.  Big gift shop here for all Fuji TV related shows.
  • Another recent attraction is the Teamlab interactive light show at the MORI Building Digital Art Museum.  You can walk through fantastic light displays that react to your presence.
  • Sony ExploraScience.  Exploring science through interactive exhibits for light, sound, and entertainment.  Sony does have a product showroom in Ginza which is very different from this.
  • Sega Joypolis.  This is a big arcade and theme park with mini-rides and games in the Decks Mall.  Make sure your expectations are set for what it offers as the admission is not cheap.
  • Tokyo Big Site.  Visit only if you are an architecture fan, otherwise it is for trade shows and expos like Tokyo Game Show, Tokyo Motor Show, International Robot Expo (IREX), AnimeJapan, Comiket, etc.
  • Odaiba ÅŒedo-onsen-monogatari. A hot springs theme park where you get the old fashioned bathing in a hot springs experience.
  • Museum of Maritime Science.  This museum looks like a ship, it has many exhibits and models of ships through history, but has displays of giant engines and hull sections too.  The retired polar expedition ship Soya is here too and worth a look.  Check their website as the museum was being renovated.
