Supermarket - Tokyo Intro: Experience #41 of 55
One way to learn about another culture is to see what is available for everyday necessities like food or household goods. It is always kind of fun to see what is on the shelves, how they are organized, and the regular prices for food and other essentials. If you are looking for a particular food product, this is where to find it too. Fruit, vegetables, liquor, and other food in bulk are some of the better buys. Convenience stores do carry exclusive instant noodles and other products to bring in customers though. Supermarkets will be cheaper in pricing than convenience stores.
There are many supermarket chains in Tokyo to choose from to shop at. Ito Yokado is a large supermarket / hypermarket chain owned by Seven and I Holdings which is one of the largest retailers in Japan that also owns all 7-11s worldwide.
There is an Ito Yokado in the Shinjuku area, and a big one down at Oimachi. In addition, another very nice supermarket is the LIFE Central Square Oshiage Supermarket (the main food floor is in the basement) across the street from the east end of the Solamachi Mall under the Tokyo Skytree. Visiting the food floor at a department store is not the same as a supermarket - and it can be more expensive too.
Some of the supermarket chains are: Aeon, Daiei, Inageya, Ito Yokado, Maruetsu, Seijo Ishii, Seiyu, Summit, and Tokyu.
To find the closest supermarket to you, search on TripAdvisor or Google.
